Noi ci siamo ispirate a quest’ultimo.
The weighing scale is a very ancient instrument dating back to the ancient Egyptians. The scale I made for our dollhouse is a replica of an old model widely used in Italy. It has a bottom suspension of the plates. This type of balance has been invented in 1600 by Gilles P. de Roberval, a French mathematician and physicist. Later in 1800 Joseph Beranger, a French engineer and manufacturer, improved it. These two models are named after their inventors. The older type of scale is called Roberval balance, while the improved model is called Béranger’s scale and is still widespread.
We took inspiration from this second one. It has of a wooden box, where the mechanisms is placed, and a marble top and two pans for weighing. On one of them you put the objects you want to weigh and on the other you place the weights until the two plates achieve the perfect balance. This is shown by the pointer, visible through an aperture in the front of the wooden box.
I used a 1mm thick cardboard to build my scale. I recycled the cardboard of boxes and packaging, such as cereals, medicines, perfumes, etc …
For this project I used two layers of cardboard, in order to obtain the correct thickness. Personally I prefer to cut a piece twice the size. Then I engrave lightly in the middle. Finally, I fold it getting the right size. So the neutral color is on the external surface, while the printed surface is now hidden in the inside. This has an aesthetic and practical reason. The printed surface doesn’t look nice and is very difficult to paint it.
I use the glue Bostik superchiaro (it is a strong universal adhesive that dries fast), because it has a quick setting. The adhesive must be evenly distributed, especially near the outer edges. At the same time it is important to be careful not to spread the glue on the external surface of the cardboard, otherwise the color will not cover it.
After having glued the two pieces of cardboard together, I pass the sandpaper on all borders in order to obtain homogeneous and perfect edges.
I due pezzi vanno poi incollati uno centrato all’altro.
For the bottom, you need two pieces of cardboard 2mm thick.
- one is 40mm x 20mm
- one is 36mm x 16mm.
The two pieces must then be centered one another and glued together.
For the two long sides of the box you need two pieces of 2mm thick cardboard
- two measuring 32mm x 10mm each.
The first piece must be glued 1mm back from the edges of the base.
Glue then the two short sides that measure
- two 12mm x 10mm each.
Cut a hole in the center of the front piece. Paste on the back a sheet of transparent acetate. This will be the glass that protects the pointer. Then glue a piece of paper with the design of the pointer. I searched the internet for images, but I could only find samples with numbers and weights. These cannot be used, because in our type of scale the needle doesn’t mark the weight, but only indicates if the two plates are in balance.
Infine ho passato dello smalto lucido trasparente.
I painted the box with watercolors. I started with a light brown. This first hand must not be homogeneous. I let it dry and then took a dark brown. I used a flat stiff-bristled brush. In this way I left only some traces of darker color, imitating the veins. Finally I gave a coat of clear gloss enamel.
The marble top is made from a 2mm thick cardboard, that measures
- 40mm x 20mm.
This has to be covered with a paper with a marble print. If you want to use the same marble of our project, you can find it in the blog’s page dedicated to the Materials.
Cut a rectangle from the paper measuring
- 50mm x 30mm.
Spread the diluted vinyl glue on the back of the paper and place the cardboard in the middle. You can find the explanations on how to apply the paper here in the second half of the linked post.
Cut of the exceeding paper at the corners, taking care to leave 3mm of paper in front of each corner of the cardboard.
Fold the first limb and quickly stick it to the back of the cardboard.
Press the paper at the corners, as shown in the picture. Fold the limb of paper on the back and let it adhere to the cardboard.
Repeat these steps also for the other short side. If the glue has dried in the meantime, apply a new brush stroke.
Press the paper close to the two last corners. Fold and glue the remaining limb of paper on the back of the cardboard.
The marble top is now ready and can be applied on the wooden box.
Around the aperture, where you can see the pointer, I applied a golden ring (jewelry finding) to give a finishing touch.
The wooden box with the marble top is ready.
For the pans of the scale I took an aluminum blister. The cavities which contain the tablets have a diameter of 15mm and a rounded shape. I cut carefully along the edge and I got the perfect plates. Then I attached them with some glue on the marble top.
The two pan scale is now in the kitchen! I’m glad to have created a new original object. I have not yet seen something similar in the internet. I hope that my explanations will be useful and that you soon will own one too.
I apologize for the poor quality of some pictures in this post, but I am doing some tests with a new camera.
I take this opportunity also to tell you that I’m sorry, if my English is not always as accurate as it should be. Anyway I hope that I’m doing a better job than google translator ;-), and if you should notice horrible mistakes, please leave a comment – your help will be very appreciated!
In conclusion, I would like to show you an interesting variant of the twin-pan balance. It is a model to weigh babies produced in the 19th century. The infant sat in the wicker basket, while the weights were put on the pan . As you can see, on the base of the scale there is the name of a well-known manufacturer of infant formula. They used the scale to promote their products.

What wonderful scales !
My grandmother had a set like this and seeing yours brought back the gentle “clonk” as the pan decended when something was placed in it.
Using the blister pack for the weighing pans is a stroke of genius.
I knew there had to be a use for blister packs… 🙂
Thank you for making these and the tutorial to go with them.
Elizabeth
PS
Your English is excellent – a million times better than my Italian (even with the help of Google) will ever be.

Thank you Elisabeth, you are really nice!
The idea to use the blister pack hit me like a bolt from the blue. 🙂
Sometimes I look at an object and immediately I know how I could use it for in an 1:12 scale project. Other times I have no idea what to do with it, but I keep it, because sooner or later I will use it. I will not tell you how many pieces, cuttings, scrap of any type of material I collect….
Greetings from a rainy Italy

PS: I have downloaded your mini folding doll’s house. I will assemble it for the childrens’ room in our attic!

I think your scales are wonderful – they look so right! – and I certainly do understand how many bits and pieces you must have collected because “one day they will come in useful”…
I hope that the house works well for you.
