The trim that you see in the picture above is called Dresden paper or Dresdner Pappe – literally from German: cardboard of Dresden. This decorative elements, borders or small figures, are die-cut, and are stamped from golden paper.
These quality emellishments were invented around 1870 in Dresden, Germany, and were very popular until the first half of the twentieth century.
They were used as ornament, especially as a decoration for Christmas trees.
These elements would be perfect as gilt mounts for miniature furniture, but they are hard to find in Milan. For this reason I decided to do them by myself, using an emboss punch and a sheet of golden aluminium foil.
Again the nimble fingers and sharp eyes of my daughter Dada came in aid! With a sharp pair of scissors and a lot of patience she managed to trim the excess edge around the golden leaves.
The mounts, thus obtained, complete and finish the cabinet and at the same time they hide the joints. The result is absolutely convincing. Now we have to look for some other punches, so we can produce new mounts with new forms to embellish furniture and frames in 1:12 scale.
André-Charles Boulle, cabinetmaker at the French royal court of Loius XIV, was one of the first to use gilt bronze mounts. These metal elements did not only protect vulnerable parts of the furniture, but also added a sculptural beauty to the piece.
With the accession to the throne of Louis XVI in France, in 1774, and the advent of Neoclassicism the furniture become elegant and sober and are increasingly decorated with gilded bronze ornaments. The motives are archaeological, rosettes, military friezes, acanthus leaves, meanders, pine cones and medallions.
In the first decade of the nineteenth century furnishings are adorned in particular by sphinxes, palmettes, urns, caryatids and Egyptian profiles and obelisks.
Starting from 1799, during the consular period, the gilt bronze mounts become an essential element. Pillars, balusters, legs and arms are finished with stars, arrows, and Greek, Roman, Etruscan and Egyptian goddess.
With the advance of Napoleon, the Empire style spreads in Europe, with the exception of England. It will be popular during the first quarter of the nineteenth century. The motives of the mounts are the N framed by laurel wreaths, bees, eagles, swans, lira, columns, pillars, palms, leaves, eagles, dolphins, winged lions and sphinxes.
The Second Empire style that goes from 1848 to 1870, during the reign of Napoleon III, continues to use metal ornaments. Thanks to industrialization the idea to produce furniture for everyone can be realized. The ornaments are now produced in series, melting and printing the pieces and then gilted by electroplating.
